The NFL Draft process doesn’t truly conclude with the announcement of Mr. Irrelevant. Following the final pick, numerous players are signed by teams after going undrafted. While many of these players serve as training camp bodies and may not ultimately make the team, there are always some hidden gems among them. After an impressive draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed five undrafted free agents, each with varying chances of making the final roster.
Beanie Bishop, a defensive back from West Virginia, stands out as the most likely among the five to secure a roster spot. With the Steelers still needing to address their slot cornerback position, Bishop could fill that role effectively. He boasts a strong track record, earning recognition as a second-team All-American and first-team All-Big 12 selection last season, showcasing his playmaking abilities and solid run support.
Julius Welschof, an edge rusher from Charlotte, follows Bishop with a reasonable chance of making the team. While T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith anchor the Steelers’ edge rush, Welschof could contend for a depth spot, especially with the departure of Markus Golden. His athleticism and potential make him a candidate for consideration.
John Rhys Plumlee, a quarterback from UCF, brings versatility to the table, having also played wide receiver and baseball. While he faces stiff competition for the QB3 spot, his athleticism and adaptability could see him utilized in a Taysom Hill-like role or as a gadget player on special teams, offering him a slim chance of making the roster.
Daijun Edwards, a running back from Georgia, may not have heard his name called during the draft, but he remains a viable candidate for the Steelers’ practice squad. While unlikely to secure a spot among the top three running backs, his skills in the passing game and as a blocker make him a valuable depth option.
Jacoby Windmon, a linebacker from Michigan State, faces the toughest odds among the Steelers’ undrafted free agents. With the team already rostering five linebackers, including recent acquisition Patrick Queen, Windmon’s path to securing a spot in the rotation appears challenging. While he may contribute on special teams, his chances of making the final roster remain slim.
