Raiders Eye $160 Million QB as Minshew’s Season Ends in Shock Injury

The Las Vegas Raiders are still in rebuild mode, and finding a starting quarterback is a critical step toward moving forward. With the remainder of a disappointing season ahead, the team now has an opportunity to experiment with different options. Currently, there are few quarterbacks on the market who could potentially fill that role in 2025, but former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is one of the closest possibilities. Dianna Russini of The Athletic recently discussed this in her “Scoop City” podcast on November 26, noting that multiple teams are showing interest in Jones. She pointed out that the Raiders, dealing with injuries in their quarterback room, could be a logical landing spot for him. However, Jones may prefer to wait for a chance to join a playoff contender instead.

Raiders fans, however, may not be thrilled with this prospect after enduring the final days of Derek Carr’s tenure and the letdown of Jimmy Garoppolo. Since then, the team has struggled with inconsistent quarterback play, alternating between Gardner Minshew, who is now sidelined for the season with a broken collarbone, and Aidan O’Connell, who will start against the Kansas City Chiefs despite recovering from a broken thumb. The Raiders’ other options are limited, with the 2024 NFL Draft offering a potentially weak quarterback class. If the Raiders were to draft a quarterback today, they would select third overall, likely choosing between Shedeur Sanders of Colorado or Cam Ward of Miami. Alternatively, free agency could present options such as Sam Darnold of the Minnesota Vikings or Justin Fields of the Pittsburgh Steelers, though the best quarterbacks may not be available.

Bringing Daniel Jones in now could give the Raiders a chance to evaluate him and perhaps spark some energy in the locker room. Despite signing a $160 million extension with the Giants less than two years ago, Jones could be affordable for the remainder of the 2024 season, with no long-term commitments required. However, Jones might prioritize joining a playoff contender, which could pose a challenge for the Raiders. Russini also reported that Jones is expected to sign with a new team by the end of the week.
