Race Heating Up: Sunderland, Burnley, and Rival Clubs Target In-Form Celtic Star

Sunderland and Burnley are among a number of English clubs showing interest in Celtic’s promising young striker, Daniel Cummings, according to Pete O’Rourke. Sunderland, in particular, have been focused on strengthening their striker position over the past couple of seasons. Back in the summer of 2022, the Black Cats signed three forwards, two of whom were intended for future development. However, none of those signings had an immediate impact. As a result, Sunderland added two more forwards this summer, with Wilson Isidor making an instant impression, while Ahmed Abdullahi, though sidelined by injury, is still considered an exciting prospect for the future.

Despite these additions and the form of Eliezer Mayenda, as well as the post-transfer window arrival of Aaron Connolly, Sunderland’s attacking concerns seem to be resolved. However, reports suggest that the club is still keeping an eye on new talent, with Daniel Cummings now on their radar. Cummings caught the attention of several English clubs when he scored in a UEFA Youth League game against Club Brugge. The 18-year-old has been in impressive form, netting five goals in five games in that competition, and has also scored 17 goals in just 14 appearances for Celtic B this season.

Other clubs showing interest in Cummings include Burnley, Wolves, Fulham, and Ipswich Town. While Sunderland have an abundance of young talent in attack, including Abdullahi, who will likely feature for the club’s youth teams once fit, the homegrown duo of Trey Ogunuyi and Finn Geragusian are also making a mark. Ogunuyi has been outstanding, scoring nine goals in seven games this season and is on the cusp of a first-team call-up. Meanwhile, Geragusian has impressed in the U18s with four goals and two assists in seven games. If Cummings were to join Sunderland, he would face stiff competition, even within the youth ranks.

As for Sunderland’s current form, their recent run of five consecutive draws has seen them drop out of the automatic promotion spots in the Championship. Despite remaining unbeaten in their last 10 matches, the Black Cats are understandably disappointed with their recent results. Their upcoming fixtures look challenging, with an away game against second-placed Sheffield United, who have been dominant at home this season. Following that, Sunderland will face two back-to-back home matches against Stoke City and Bristol City, both of which will be crucial as they look to get back on track.
