Brock Purdy, the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, is seeking advice from a Hall of Famer before the greatest game of his life.
Prior to Super Bowl LVIII, Purdy disclosed on Friday that he plans to consult with Steve Young, one of the all-time great quarterbacks.
If Purdy is looking for someone who has been in his shoes and found success doing it, he’d be hard-pressed to find a better option than Young.
Young played in the NFL for 15 seasons, 13 of which were spent with San Francisco, where he was a two-time MVP, seven-time Pro Bowler, and three-time All-Pro. Before being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
In games where the Lombardi Trophy was at stake, Young was, most importantly, two for two. He was named MVP of Super Bowl XXIV and XXIX after leading San Francisco to victories over the then-San Diego Chargers 49–26 through six touchdown passes.
Although Young and Purdy have recently spoken, this exchange should be much more significant and may include questions that have never been asked before.
The two appeared together in a sit-down interview on the 49ers’ YouTube channel a few weeks ago. However, the stakes were much lower then, and much of the conversation focused on faith.
This time around, cameras won’t capture what’s said. It’ll be a moment between two men who already share a few common bonds and could be a little over a week away from sharing one more.
In addition, Purdy will have the chance to learn firsthand about the Super Bowl experience from one of the few individuals who can provide it.
