Pundit and former England international Carlton Palmer has urged Southampton owner Dragan Solak not to dismiss struggling manager Russell Martin, despite West Bromwich Albion’s Carlos Corberan being mentioned as a possible successor.
According to a recent report from TEAMtalk, Southampton manager Russell Martin is just one game away from losing his job following a challenging start to the 2024/25 Premier League season. The 38-year-old led the Saints to promotion through the playoffs last year, but his adherence to a strict possession-based style has divided fans.
So far, Southampton has managed only one point from their first seven matches, including a 1-1 draw against Ipswich on September 21. If they lose to fellow newly-promoted Leicester City this weekend, Martin could be on his way out, with the club reportedly already considering potential replacements. Among those being monitored is Carlos Corberan, who has made a strong start with West Brom in the Championship.
Pundit Carlton Palmer believes Corberan’s lack of Premier League experience might hinder his chances of being hired by Southampton, which may prefer a more established candidate to navigate a potential relegation battle. “Southampton is currently in 19th place, with only one point. Their next game is crucial against Leicester City,” Palmer stated. “While Corberan has done a fantastic job at West Brom, he hasn’t managed in the Premier League. The reality is that Southampton is just three points off Ipswich Town, and a couple of wins could change everything.”
Palmer argues that Southampton’s hierarchy should remain patient with Martin, who successfully guided the team to the Premier League. “It’s essential to trust the manager who got you promoted. It would be disappointing if they fail to get a result against Leicester, but it’s unfair to dismiss him at this stage,” he added.
West Brom may also face pressure if Southampton decides to part ways with Martin. While Corberan has revitalized the Baggies since his arrival in October 2022, leading them to playoff contention, the prospect of managing in the Premier League could be tempting. However, West Brom must do everything possible to retain Corberan, especially as they aim for promotion themselves.
As of October 14, West Brom sits fourth in the EFL Championship, showcasing Corberan’s ability to maximize the team’s potential against rivals with larger budgets. His tactical flexibility is a key reason Southampton is considering him as a viable successor to Martin, who has faced criticism for his rigid approach. For West Brom, keeping Corberan is essential if they hope to return to the top flight.
