Port Adelaide is set to make several changes for Friday’s preliminary final against minor premiers Sydney, with coach Ken Hinkley “optimistic” that veteran forward Charlie Dixon and defender Ryan Burton will be available. Burton is aiming to return after missing last week’s win over Hawthorn due to a calf injury, while Dixon was a late withdrawal from the semi-final due to illness.
With tall forward Todd Marshall sidelined by a concussion, Dixon—who appears to have recovered from his illness—is expected to be brought into the forward line. Burton’s return could create selection dilemmas, especially since youngster Josh Sinn performed well in his place against Hawthorn.
Wingman Jase Burgoyne could be shifted to a higher position after filling in on defense, while tactical sub Will Lorenz may step aside, allowing players like Sinn, Quinton Narkle, or Francis Evans to take a bench role. Speaking to the media, Hinkley expressed confidence in Dixon and Burton’s return, emphasizing Burton’s strong form before his injury.
“We’re optimistic [Dixon] will be available, and Burton too,” Hinkley said. “Ryan’s form in the previous three weeks was outstanding. If he’s fit, he’ll play.”
To avoid any last-minute issues, the Power will bring an extended squad to Sydney, considering the club’s SANFL season is over. This decision is influenced by a past experience when Hinkley had to call on rookie Kyle Marshall for a potential debut in Geelong after illness caused late changes to the squad.
“We’ll travel with a full squad and a few extras, just in case,” Hinkley explained. “You cover as many bases as possible, especially at this time of year.”
Port Adelaide will face Sydney at the SCG on Friday night, with the winner securing a spot in the 2024 AFL Grand Final.
