Paul Merson takes a ‘PlayStation’ dig in his Southampton vs Everton score prediction

Paul Merson issued a clear warning to Southampton about their playing style but still predicts a Saints victory over Everton this Saturday (2 November).

Everton will take on Russell Martin’s winless Southampton at St Mary’s, riding the momentum from a recent five-game unbeaten run in the Premier League. This streak includes a late equalizer from Beto at Goodison Park in a 1-1 draw against Fulham. However, despite Everton’s form, Paul Merson predicted a 2-1 win for Southampton, quipping that the Saints play like they’re on “PlayStation” by taking too many risks from the back.

Merson commented, “Everton will know exactly how Southampton will try to play, and Sean Dyche will be ready. Southampton’s risky style only works on PlayStation!” He noted that Everton’s pressing could force Southampton into mistakes, allowing the Toffees to capitalize and score. He also mentioned the struggles of both Southampton and Ipswich, both of whom are winless in 20 combined league games.

Everton, though not clear favorites, still have the firepower to overcome Southampton. There is some uncertainty around star player Dwight McNeil’s availability, but recent arrival Iliman Ndiaye has been a dynamic addition to the attack. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is also keen to prove his value, with discussions underway about extending his stay at Goodison Park.

Everton recently defeated winless Ipswich 2-0 at Portman Road, so a repeat performance against Southampton is possible. But with Crystal Palace securing their first win last week, Dyche will remain cautious of Southampton’s potential threat, as Everton aims to avoid any slip-ups that could pull them closer to the relegation zone.
