Even though it appears unlikely that the Braves will secure another NL East title, their season is far from over. The team is still in the playoff hunt, holding onto the final NL Wild Card spot, though the Cubs and Mets are close behind.
There’s still reason for optimism about a potential postseason run. While the Braves may not have the offensive firepower to make them favorites, they possess a rare and exceptional pitching staff, especially in their starting rotation, which could make a difference in October.
Additionally, the Braves could regain some key offensive players. Austin Riley is currently on the injured list, and while his return is uncertain, Ozzie Albies is expected to be back this month. According to Grant McAuley, the Braves’ star second baseman is targeting a mid-to-late September return. Although there was earlier hope for an earlier return, it now seems that Albies may have limited time to get back into form before a critical series against the Mets.
In Albies’ absence, Whit Merrifield has performed admirably, and once Albies returns, Merrifield could shift to the outfield, further strengthening the lineup. The Braves are entering a crucial stretch, and the sooner Albies returns, the better their chances as they push toward the postseason.
On the football side, the Falcons’ offense has been considered their strength heading into the season, led by quarterback Kirk Cousins, a solid offensive line, and three top-10 draft picks. Zac Robinson, the team’s offensive coordinator, is also generating buzz as a rising star in the coaching ranks.
The Falcons’ offense has the potential to be one of the best in the NFL. PFF’s Trevor Sikkema believes the Falcons could field a top-five offense in 2024, citing their strong offensive line, the promise of Bijan Robinson in his second season, and the stability Kirk Cousins brings at quarterback. With all five starters returning on the offensive line and key playmakers like Drake London, Kyle Pitts, and Bijan Robinson, the Falcons’ offense is loaded with talent.
Additionally, recent acquisitions of defensive standouts Matt Judon and Justin Simmons have balanced the Falcons’ roster, making them a more well-rounded team. While the defense is no longer seen as a weakness, the offense is expected to be a dominant force, capable of carrying the team to success in a wide-open NFC.
If everything falls into place, the Falcons could boast an elite offense in 2024, making them a serious contender in the league.
