Nottingham Forest resolves striker situation after transfer pursuit, turning attention to Gibbs-White.
Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo is confident that Nottingham Forest has enough attacking options to cope without a new striker following the transfer deadline.
Forest had prioritized signing a forward before the summer window closed, targeting players like Eddie Nketiah, Santiago Gimenez, and Omar Marmoush. However, none were added before the window shut on Friday. This means Chris Wood and Taiwo Awoniyi will lead the attack until January. Wood, who scored his second goal of the season in the 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers, could have had more, but a great save from Sam Johnstone and an offside call denied him.
Despite the draw, Forest looked strong going forward, with Morgan Gibbs-White shining in attack before his first call-up to the England senior squad. With Wood, Awoniyi, Gibbs-White, and the newly signed wingers Jota Silva and Ramon Sosa, Nuno believes Forest has the depth to challenge opposing defenses. Below are his thoughts on transfers, the match, and Gibbs-White’s call-up.
On transfer window business:
“It’s done, finally. Now, we can all settle down. The transfer noise was a distraction, but it’s over, and it’s time to regroup. Our focus from the beginning was clear: those who want to be here stayed. We’re happy with that. There were some distractions on Friday, like Newcastle’s interest in Anthony Elanga, but we stayed focused on bringing in James Ward-Prowse and Morato to balance our squad. James brings experience and quality as an additional midfield option. Now, with the noise over, we can focus on improving.”
On whether the squad has enough goals without a new striker:
“The window is closed. It’s on us now. We have options, and we believe our wingers, with patience and training, can play up front and offer us different things.”
On squad options:
“Our squad is more balanced, as we saw in midweek with many changes. It gives us flexibility, knowing players’ form will fluctuate, and it’s up to us to manage that.”
On Gibbs-White’s call-up:
“It’s a dream come true for him, something he’s worked hard for. It’s well deserved. He’s playing good football, and we wish him the best. It’s a proud moment for Forest, as it’s been a while since we had a player in the England squad. We hope he and all our international players return healthy.”
On Gibbs-White’s potential for a senior international career:
“Yes, especially given his rise through the age groups. He’s a world champion from a talented generation. It’s the right moment for him to take on more responsibility. He’s humble and knows he has much to improve on.”
On Saturday’s game against Wolves
“The first half lacked rhythm and flow due to frequent stoppages. Both teams lost and regained possession often, and we struggled to control the game. We scored but then conceded due to a mistake. The second half was different; we were more in control and dominant, pressing Wolves well. There were moments we could have done better, but overall, we looked solid. I’m disappointed we didn’t get three points, but it’s a positive that we went for them.”
On Chris Wood’s importance
“Chris was close to getting a second goal. He always delivers, not just with goals but with his overall work for the team.”
