According to reports, Newcastle United target Giorgi Mamardashvili is on the verge of signing with Premier League club Liverpool.
The Georgian international Giorgi Mamardashvili was strongly linked with a move to Newcastle United earlier this summer, particularly after his impressive performances for his national team at this year’s European Championships.
Local media reported that Mamardashvili had caught the attention of Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe due to his standout performances in La Liga, where he kept 13 clean sheets in 37 games. Only three other goalkeepers managed more shutouts in the league last season.
Since then, Newcastle has signed two new goalkeepers, John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos, while Loris Karius was released, and Martin Dubravka could potentially leave the club this summer.
Giorgi Mamardashvili is now poised to replace Alisson at Liverpool. According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool has agreed on personal terms with Mamardashvili, with Valencia set to receive around £35 million from the transfer.
However, the 23-year-old is reportedly keen on spending some time out on loan before becoming Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper. Romano mentions that Mamardashvili would ideally spend “one or two years elsewhere on loan.” Bournemouth, another Premier League side, has shown interest in the Georgian, after which he would take over as Liverpool’s top keeper once Alisson departs.

Agents now in Valencia for club talks
NO agreement yet. pic.twitter.com/rPEgWFGhy8— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) August 14, 2024
As for Newcastle, the agents of both Liverpool and Valencia are currently in Spain to finalize the deal, but no concrete agreement has been reached yet. While Newcastle still has time to make a move, it seems unlikely given that they already have five goalkeepers on their roster. Dubravka, one of Newcastle’s current keepers, might be leaving this summer, with interest from clubs across Europe and the Middle East.
Additionally, there were rumors last month that John Ruddy could be loaned out to Championship side Blackburn.
