Newcastle triumph in Sela Cup as summer signing debuts

Newcastle United clinched Sela Cup success for the second year in a row with a 1-0 win over Stade Brestois at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.

Harvey Barnes secured Newcastle’s win with a first-half goal, while new signing William Osula made his debut for the team. Although Osula’s goal was disallowed for offside, Barnes’ strike, curling in from a Lloyd Kelly pass just after 15 minutes, was enough to clinch the victory.

Manager Eddie Howe rotated his squad over the two games at St James’ Park, following Newcastle’s dominant win over Girona on Friday night. Kelly, Bruno Guimarães, Miguel Almirón, and Barnes all completed the full 90 minutes, with Osula playing 68 minutes in his debut. Kieran Trippier also made his first appearance of the summer.

Newcastle United will begin their Premier League campaign next Saturday against Southampton. Meanwhile, Newcastle United Women celebrated their own success, winning a trophy after a penalty shoot-out against AC Milan Women earlier in the day.

Newcastle United’s lineup was: Dúbravka (Vlachodimos 46); Trippier (Ashby 68), Schär (Stanton 82), Kelly, Lewis; Harrison (Sanusi 46), Bruno Guimarães, Willock (Munda 88); Almirón, Osula (Hernes 68), Barnes.

Unused subs: Gillespie, Shahar, Heffernan, Emerson.
