Alasdair Lamont suggests that Neraysho Kasanwirjo could be a better option at centre-back than Robin Propper if Leon Balogun is unavailable for certain matches. Kasanwirjo and Propper were both signed during the summer transfer window as part of Rangers’ overhaul of their first-team squad. In his article for BBC Sport on November 13, Lamont argues that Kasanwirjo, who has primarily played as a full-back, should be given the chance to fill in at centre-back in Balogun’s absence, especially considering Propper’s struggles in the position.
Lamont also highlighted the bold decision made by manager Philippe Clement to replace James Tavernier with Dujon Sterling in the match against Athens, a move Lamont supported as necessary. While Tavernier returned to the lineup for the game against Hearts, Lamont believes that both Sterling and Kasanwirjo deserve more time on the pitch. In particular, Kasanwirjo could prove a stronger alternative to Propper at centre-back if Balogun is not available for every match.
Since arriving late in the summer transfer window, Kasanwirjo has not been as involved in Rangers’ starting lineup as he might have hoped. However, under Clement’s leadership, the club has introduced several new defensive players like Propper and Jefte. While some of these signings have made an immediate impact, others, like Propper, have yet to settle in. Despite not contributing any goals or assists, Kasanwirjo has consistently put in solid performances when called upon. His speed, athleticism, and defensive awareness could make him a valuable asset at centre-back, a role he has yet to play regularly.
Propper has had multiple opportunities this season, but his performances have been underwhelming, leaving many fans uneasy when he is in the starting XI. With Balogun nearing the later stages of his career, it may be wise for Clement to rest him occasionally, preserving him for the more high-stakes games and offering Kasanwirjo a chance to prove himself in a key defensive role.
