New Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris is keen to enhance the team’s attacking prowess this season, addressing the goal-scoring deficiencies that plagued the Wearside outfit last campaign. Despite being a Championship side, Sunderland had only one player, Jack Clarke, reach double figures with 15 goals. In contrast, regular forward Nazariy Rusyn managed a mere two goals.
The potential departure of Clarke to a more prominent club could further weaken Sunderland’s attack. However, the team appears close to signing Alexandre Mendy from SM Caen to strengthen their striker options at the Stadium of Light. Despite Mendy’s impending move to England, Sunderland should still consider pursuing another effective striker to ensure a robust offensive lineup.
Sunderland could reignite interest in wanted forward
According to football journalist Darren Witcoop, many EFL teams are considering a move for Fulham’s promising talent Jay Stansfield during this transfer window, following his impressive performance with Birmingham City last season.
Birmingham City, with their substantial financial resources, seem to have an advantage in the competition for Stansfield. Witcoop reported that negotiations have already taken place for the striker’s return to St. Andrew’s, despite his hefty price tag of over £5 million.
While Sunderland has previously shown interest in the 21-year-old, Fulham’s high asking price might deter them. Birmingham, on the other hand, is keen to secure another significant signing for League One.
However, if Sunderland wants to make a statement after their disappointing 2023/24 season, they might consider going all in for Stansfield. He could be a significant upgrade over the Ligue 2 Golden Boot winner they are currently pursuing.
