Michael Porter Jr.’s younger brother, Coban Porter, was given a lengthy prison term in connection with his deadly DUI conviction.
After running a red light while intoxicated last year, Coban Porter was given a six-year prison sentence. Porter was charged with vehicular homicide on January 22, 2023, while he was driving close to Denver University, the basketball school he played for. When Coban ran a red light at South University Boulevard and struck a car driven by 42-year-old Katharina Rothman, he was believed to be traveling at 50 mph. At the scene, Rothman was pronounced deceased. Jason Blanch, a 47-year-old passenger, was gravely hurt in the collision while she was driving for Uber at the time. Since then, Porter has been sued, as has the pub where he was drinking before getting into his drunken car.
Coban’s blood alcohol concentration was 2.1/2 times greater than the 0.08 legal limit, at 0.20.
In October 2023, Coban entered a plea of not guilty to the DUI charges he was facing. But in February, he entered a new plea in which he admitted to both vehicular assault and vehicular homicide. Porter was now facing eight years in prison rather than 24 due to the altered plea.
The Porter family has now received two heartbreaking pieces of news this week. Days after the NBA banned Jontay Porter for gambling, Coban received his sentence. Michael Porter Jr., who is currently in his sixth season with the Denver Nuggets, is their other sibling.
