Michael Beale has outlined the role that Chris Rigg will undertake for Sunderland for the remainder of the season.
Rigg gained prominence last season, with Sunderland successfully securing him on a scholarship deal amidst interest from rival clubs like Newcastle and Manchester United.
Despite the initial buzz surrounding him, Rigg’s involvement in the current campaign was expected to increase. He notably made history by becoming Sunderland’s youngest-ever goal scorer during their 5-0 victory over Southampton in September.
However, Tony Mowbray’s departure limited his opportunities with the senior squad. His recent seven-minute appearance against Stoke City marked his return after a hiatus since October, yet it was enough to catch the attention of Michael Beale.
The Sunderland manager emphasized Rigg’s significance in the team for the upcoming months, labeling him as “really important.” Beale commended Rigg’s performance against Stoke, highlighting his desire to contribute significantly rather than settling for a peripheral role.
Despite his youth, Rigg demonstrated eagerness to be actively involved and asserted his readiness to play. While acknowledging his age, Beale underscored the importance of considering Rigg’s talent and determination in shaping his role within the team.
