Russell Martin disclosed that Southampton fullback Ryan Manning was displeased with being omitted against Coventry but ultimately “respected” the decision.
Southampton’s Irish international, Ryan Manning, was notably absent from the squad during their 2-1 victory against Coventry on Tuesday. Manager Russell Martin opted for Jan Bednarek as the sole defender on the bench, with versatile Shea Charles also included for added cover.
The starting lineup featured James Bree and Kyle Walker-Peters as fullbacks, while Jack Stephens, typically a left-back, played in the center of defense. Martin explained to the Daily Echo that he aimed to maximize attacking options on the bench, hence Manning’s omission.
Although Manning wasn’t pleased with the decision, he respected it due to his strong relationship with Martin. The decision was primarily strategic, with Charles providing defensive reinforcement when needed.
Manning, who joined Southampton from Swansea City in the summer, has been a consistent presence this season, with 32 Championship appearances to his name.
