SAINTS manager Russell Martin described Paul Onuachu as “a different Paul” compared to last season after the striker made an unexpected return to action.
The Nigerian international made his return to action in the 72nd minute of Southampton’s final pre-season friendly on Saturday, a 0-0 draw against Getafe.
This marked Onuachu’s first appearance for the Saints since their 3-1 EFL Cup loss to Gillingham over a year ago, in August 2023.
Last season, Onuachu was on loan at Trabzonspor, where he impressed by scoring 15 goals in just 21 appearances in the Turkish Super Lig.
Speaking to the Daily Echo, manager Russell Martin noted, “He’s different from what we have. He’s trained really, really well.
“He’s a different Paul from the one I encountered last season in terms of confidence. Last pre-season was tough for many players who hadn’t had a chance in the Premier League or joined in January but struggled to settle in.
“This summer, he’s a different beast, and while he’s here, like with Kyle Walker-Peters, we’ll try to utilize him,” Martin added.
The Saints are looking to sell Onuachu before the transfer window closes, but so far, they’ve only received one offer—a £5 million bid from Trabzonspor, which was rejected.
Onuachu has yet to score in his 11 Premier League appearances for the club but has netted 79 league goals since the start of the 2020/21 season.
Southampton kicks off their league campaign on Saturday, August 17, with a visit to Newcastle United, where Sekou Mara and Onuachu are the only fit number nines available.
