Marc Guehi, a transfer target for Newcastle United, has addressed the “distraction” of summer transfer rumors linking him with a move away from Crystal Palace.

Marc Guehi emerged as Newcastle’s top target during the final stretch of the summer transfer window, but negotiations fell through as Crystal Palace held firm on a £70 million valuation. Although Newcastle submitted multiple bids in August, they never met Palace’s asking price for the England international. Newcastle’s interest remains, particularly in their captain, who recently scored in Palace’s 2-2 draw with Wolves. Yet, they are also focusing on other areas, with sporting director Paul Mitchell expected to take a leading role in upcoming transfer windows.

After the Wolves match, Guehi was asked if the transfer speculation had been a distraction.

“I’d say yes and no,” he told Sky Sports. “When you’re constantly reading things about yourself, it can be distracting for some people – but I’m grateful to have a strong support system around me. My family, the club, my friends… I think it’s important to have that humility to stay focused on the task at hand. Palace has given me so much, and I’m truly thankful. Now, I just want to repay them by doing my best.”

Guehi’s contract with Palace runs until 2026, but the club may have to consider lower offers in future windows to avoid missing out on a significant sale. Though he was reportedly open to a move to Newcastle over the summer, Guehi has also expressed happiness at staying with Palace. He has now earned 20 caps for England and was a standout performer for the Three Lions during Euro 2024.
