Saints boss Russell Martin emphasized that Ryan Manning’s unexpected call-up to Ireland was less than ideal for both the left-back and the club.
The 27-year-old initially wasn’t included in interim manager John O’Shea’s squad but later joined up after recovering from nose surgery. Manning linked up with Southampton teammates Gavin Bazunu and Will Smallbone but remained unused in Ireland’s friendlies against Belgium and Switzerland.
Southampton manager Russell Martin expressed disappointment that Manning didn’t feature in either match, considering his recent surgery. Martin mentioned to the Daily Echo, “He had an operation because he broke his nose against Birmingham. The plan was to keep him here to let it settle and keep him fit.
” However, they were informed of Ireland’s desire for Manning to participate, despite him not playing. Martin added, “It’s not ideal for Ryan or us, but it’s their prerogative.” Manning, who has appeared 33 times for Southampton this season after joining from Swansea, could have benefited from training and recovering with Southampton rather than traveling for friendlies.
