Man  Utd  and  Arsenal  face  criticism  for  their  “backwards”  acquisitions  of  David  Raya  and  Andre  Onana,  with  questions  raised  about  goalkeeper  manipulation.

Manchester United and Arsenal went “backwards andquot; in goalkeeping quality after bringing in Andre Onana and David Rayar, says Jamie Carragher.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Onana and Raya faced criticism for glaring mistakes in their debut seasons at United and Arsenal. United signed Inter’s Cameroonian star to replace David De Gea, while Mikel Arteta made Raya his first-choice goalkeeper ahead of England international Aaron Ramsdale.

WHAT CARRGHER SAID

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, former Liverpool star Carragher said the pair were the worst summer signings in the Premier League this season, saying: andquot; The biggest disappointments in the Premier League this season would be Manchester’s two goalkeepers. United and Arsenal.

They were pretty bad since they got both repaired and #039; of the previous guardians and it remained almost the same or even reversed when they entered.andquot;

THE BIGGER PICTURE

United’s Champions League hopes have been seriously compromised by Onana’s missteps.

He has been blamed for their disappointments in Europe, most recently after they surrendered a 3-1 lead to draw 3-3 with Galatasaray.

Raya, meanwhile, has made a number of high-profile errors in the Premier League and Luton manager Rob Edwards has admitted his side are targeting the goalkeeper to force him to commit his glaring mistake.

Fortunately for the Spaniard, Arsenal salvaged a 3-2 win against them earlier this week.

WHAT’S COMING FOR ONANA AND RAYA?

United boss Erik ten Hag and his Arsenal counterpart Mikel Arteta are standing by the goalkeeper despite his struggles. Onana will be in the starting line-up for their match against Bournemouth on Saturday, while Raya is likely when the Gunners face Aston Villa the following day.
