Leeds United should launch bid for Championship centre-back who Southampton made £10m offer for last year

Leeds United and Southampton are set to explore different avenues in the transfer market this summer. Following their victory over Leeds in the Championship play-off final last month, Southampton now enjoys greater financial flexibility to bolster their squad for the Premier League. Leeds, conversely, must adopt a more strategic approach in their player acquisitions to adhere to financial regulations, though Paraag Marathe has assured that there will be funds available for new signings.

While Leeds can officially start signing players from today, this does not imply that preparations haven’t already been underway. The recent discussions between Brenden Aaronson and manager Daniel Farke, leading to Aaronson’s agreement to return to Elland Road next season, underscore the ongoing efforts behind the scenes.

A year ago, Leeds and Southampton found themselves in similar positions, both in search of new managers after facing relegation. Consequently, their transfer targets overlapped significantly, with players like Joel Piroe, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, and Max Aarons being linked to both clubs. However, one player Southampton pursued who was not on Leeds’ radar was Swansea City defender Nathan Wood. Southampton’s £10 million bid for Wood was rejected last year, and they are expected to make another attempt to sign him.

Wood, now with only a year left on his contract and no indications of an extension, presents a viable option for Leeds, especially with uncertainties surrounding Joe Rodon’s return, Liam Cooper’s contract status, and Charlie Cresswell’s potential departure. If Leeds cannot secure a deal for Rodon, Wood would be an excellent alternative. His contract situation suggests he could be available for less than £10 million.

Last season, Wood made 26 appearances for Swansea and, at just 22 years old, has significant potential for growth. According to FBRef, Wood’s playing style is similar to that of Pascal Struijk. Fielding both defenders together next season could provide a solid foundation for Leeds to mount another promotion challenge.
