Leeds United should bid for Championship centre-back Southampton offered £10m for last year

This summer, Leeds United and Southampton will be targeting entirely different transfer markets.

After defeating Leeds in the Championship play-off final last month, Southampton now has more financial freedom to build a squad capable of staying in the Premier League. Leeds, on the other hand, must be more strategic in their recruitment to remain compliant with PSR, although Paraag Marathe has assured that funds will be available.

Leeds can officially start signing players today, but behind-the-scenes work has already been underway. The fact that Brenden Aaronson has already held talks with Daniel Farke and agreed to return to Elland Road next season is clear evidence of this preparation.

Leeds Should Move for Former Southampton Target Nathan Wood

A year ago, Leeds and Southampton were in similar positions, both looking for new managers after relegation. As a result, their transfer targets overlapped significantly, with players like Joel Piroe, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, and Max Aarons linked to both clubs. One player Southampton targeted, but Leeds didn’t, was Swansea City defender Nathan Wood, who had previously worked under Russell Martin.

According to Wales Online, Southampton had a £10 million offer for Wood rejected by Swansea last year and are bracing for new offers. With just a year remaining on his contract and no signs of an extension, Wood could potentially leave.

With uncertainty around Joe Rodon’s return, Liam Cooper out of contract, and Charlie Cresswell wanted elsewhere, central defenders are at the top of Farke’s wishlist. If a deal for Rodon can’t be struck, Wood would be a superb alternative, likely available for less than eight figures due to his contract situation.

Wood made 26 appearances for Swansea last season and, at just 22, has plenty of room for development. According to FBRef, Wood is similar to Pascal Struijk, and fielding two defenders of that quality next season could provide a solid foundation for another promotion push.

How Likely is Joe Rodon’s Return to Leeds?

Rodon remains Leeds’ first-choice target at centre-back after a successful loan spell from Tottenham. However, striking a permanent deal won’t be easy due to financial considerations and Premier League interest. Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna is reportedly a big fan of Rodon, which might tempt him to move elsewhere.

Leeds will undoubtedly be preparing contingency plans if Rodon doesn’t return, and Wood should certainly be one of them.
