Lavonte David, a highly accomplished player in franchise history, will be back for another season in Tampa Bay following his exceptional performance in 2023, defying his age.
Lavonte David, a revered figure in Tampa Bay Buccaneers history, has committed to another season with the team. He recently inked a one-year contract, ensuring his presence for a remarkable 13th season in the red and pewter. This marks his second consecutive offseason securing a deal with the only NFL franchise he’s known, following his previous two-year pact.
David, a second-round pick in 2012, has been a stalwart leader, serving as team captain for the past decade. His impact was instrumental in the Buccaneers clinching their third consecutive NFC South title in 2023. Leading the team with 134 tackles, his highest tally since his Pro Bowl season in 2015, David also notched 4.5 sacks, his most since 2016. His contributions extended beyond tackles, with 17 tackles for loss, five quarterback hits, five passes defensed, and a forced fumble during the regular season. In the playoffs, David continued his stellar form, topping the team’s tackle chart and making significant defensive plays.
Despite missing two games due to a groin injury, David’s consistent performance bolstered a defense that ranked among the league’s best in points allowed and rushing yards conceded. With 181 regular-season games under his belt, David boasts impressive career statistics, including 1,477 tackles, 33.5 sacks, 160 tackles for loss, and numerous forced turnovers, solidifying his place among Buccaneers legends.
Even before his standout 2023 season, David had distinguished himself as one of the NFL’s premier defenders. His remarkable consistency over the years has placed him in elite company, alongside some of the league’s all-time greats. Currently leading in several defensive categories among active players, David’s impact on the field remains significant.
The contract extension with David underscores the Buccaneers’ commitment to maintaining a strong core roster. With key re-signings and additions, Tampa Bay aims to build on its recent success and remain competitive in the upcoming season.
