Key man stays after winning survival battle, but star man leaves Stoke City

After eight years with Stoke City, Tyrese Campbell is going. The striker, 24, who is leaving the team on a high note as his contract comes to an end, was given a standing ovation at the bet365 Stadium after scoring in a 4-0 victory over Bristol City on the last day of play.

The club made the announcement of his departure today along with the confirmation that Jordan Thompson’s current contract had been extended by 12 months.

“Jordan has been a consistent performer throughout the 23/24 season and a player who never fails to give 100% for the badge,” stated Jonathan Walters, Sporting Director. We want to see him play again and remain a valuable member of our team in the upcoming campaign.

Tyrese’s accomplishment of playing in over 150 games for one squad is uncommon in the contemporary period. We appreciate his efforts wearing a Stoke City shirt, and it makes an important contribution to our club’s history.

Campbell scored the game-winning goal at Southampton and led the line for Stoke in their crucial last four games of the year, including a 3-0 victory over Plymouth at home. After a difficult season, these games helped Stoke maintain their place in the Championship, where they ultimately finished in 17th place.

At the age of sixteen, he moved from Manchester City to Stoke, where he helped the under-18 team go to the FA Youth Cup semifinals before making his Premier League debut.

The son of famous striker Kevin Campbell of Everton and Arsenal, he rose to prominence in the first team in 2020 but was largely sidelined by a knee injury that hindered his progress in 2021. He has four goals this season, three of which have come from league play, and two assists. He scored 36 goals overall in 164 games for the Potters.

After making his 150th game for the Potters not too long ago, 27-year-old Thompson will now play for the Cubs for a sixth season.

Additionally, the team disclosed that negotiations are already underway to extend the contract of Enda Stevens, a defender who has been a key player for Stoke this year, winning nine of his 21 games played. While Frank Fielding has signed a one-year contract, he will remain the third-choice keeper; nonetheless, Wesley, the striker, and center-back Ciaran Clark are leaving. After their loans are over, Daniel Iversen, Ki-Jana Hoever, Luke McNally, Luke Cundle, and Sead Hakšabanović will go back to their parent clubs.

“Those leaving know we are extremely grateful for their efforts during their time with the club,” Walters continued. We sincerely hope that they will always look back on the honor and privilege of having represented Stoke City.

“As we begin to lay the groundwork for a successful future, we feel that the decisions we are making now strike the right balance between continuity and opportunities to reshape the squad in pursuit of progress in 24/25.”

A complete retained list will be revealed eventually, according to the club.
