In Philadelphia, there’s emerging interest in linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel, a free agent who previously played under new Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio with the Miami Dolphins. Despite the name similarity to “Van Winkel,” Van Ginkel is a noteworthy figure for the Eagles, who are seeking to fortify their linebacker position. This becomes crucial with Nakobe Dean’s return from a foot injury that limited him to just five games, coupled with the impending free agency of Nicholas Morrow and Zach Cunningham.
Reportedly, Fangio is bringing Joe Kasper from South Florida to serve as the safety coach, prompting speculation about Dolphins safety DeShon Elliott as a potential target for the Eagles’ safety needs. Elliott, who started 15 games last season, is a former sixth-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens, set to turn 27 in April. He recorded 82 tackles and an interception in the previous season.
Regarding Van Ginkel, Fangio personally recruited him to Miami as a free agent after the last season. Despite drawing interest from other teams like the New England Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders, Van Ginkel opted to stay in Miami, prioritizing family stability over potentially higher offers elsewhere. He accepted a deal for $2.6 million if he played every game. Interestingly, the Eagles had a chance to draft Van Ginkel in his earlier years.
