Due to Sam Martin’s hamstring injury sustained against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday, the Buffalo Bills promoted veteran punter Matt Haack to their practice squad on Wednesday.
After Leonard Fournette failed to break into the starting lineup against the Steelers, the Bills waived him to create space on the practice squad.
Haack left the Miami Dolphins to accept a three-year contract as a free agent, and he joined the Bills for the 2021 season. He was cut by Buffalo after he was defeated by rookie Matt Araiza in the punter competition during training camp and the preseason.
Shortly after information about Araiza’s alleged involvement in a gang rape during his time as a San Diego State student surfaced, the Bills released him. Last month, Araiza was removed from that case.
Coach Sean McDermott of the Bills stated on Wednesday that while the team was investigating other punters, they ultimately decided on Haack due to their experience with him.
“Well, Brandon (Beane) looks at everything,” McDermott remarked. Therefore, he was undoubtedly thinking of many more names than I even know. We value familiarity, and we have great faith and confidence in Matt.
After Tyler Bass’s field goal attempt was blocked against the Steelers, Martin suffered a hamstring injury. At the conclusion of the action, Martin had limped after chasing down the lost ball. Despite finishing the game, he will not be practicing at the team’s Wednesday walkthrough.
“I’m not really sure where Sam’s situation is going to end up,” McDermott stated. As a result, it offers us some leeway, and Sam’s standing hasn’t really changed as of yet. Just wait and see how that plays out as well.
On Sunday, the Bills will play host to the Kansas City Chiefs at home in Highmark Stadium in the AFC divisional round.
