JUST IN : Braves announce surprise reliever signing with list of non-roster invitees

As the Atlanta Braves gear up for Spring Training, their pursuit of another World Series title involves the strategic step of extending non-roster invitations to unearth potential hidden gems before the season kicks off. In their recently announced list of non-roster invitees for 2024, familiar names like Ken Giles, Phillip Evans, David Fletcher, Luke Williams, Jordan Luplow, and Eli White stand out, all possessing MLB-level experience and potential consideration for roster spots if opportunities arise.

A surprising addition to the list is Ken Giles, whose signing with the Braves was reported by Jon Heyman after the initial announcement. Giles joins on a minor league contract, with a chance to earn $1.75 million if he makes it to the majors. Given Giles’ track record, especially finishing fourth in Rookie of the Year voting in 2014 and maintaining a career 2.71 ERA, the signing represents a calculated risk for the Braves. Giles’ impressive 2019 performance, with a 1.87 ERA in 53 innings, offers the potential for a valuable addition to the bullpen.

Recognizing the indispensability of pitching depth, the Braves extended eight out of the 23 invitations to pitchers. Equally surprising is the inclusion of the same number of infielders, hinting at the team’s inclination to carry a versatile player on the bench. With Nicky Lopez’s departure, one of these infielders could be eyeing the role he left vacant. While the outfield positions in the big league club seem settled with Jarred Kelenic, Ronald Acuna Jr., and Michael Harris, Luis Liberato, Jordan Luplow, and Eli White could be vying for minor league spots, ready to step up in case of injuries.

A noteworthy name on the list is Hurston Waldrep, a 21-year-old drafted by the Braves with the 24th overall pick in 2023. Showing promise and making a Triple-A debut with the Gwinnett Stripers in September last year, Waldrep’s rapid progression through the farm system suggests he could contend for the fifth spot in the Major League rotation by the end of the season.
