John Salley describes his experience playing for the Chicago Bulls under Michael Jordan.

What it was like to be a member of one of the best teams in NBA history is shared by Salley.

It’s funny how sometimes life works out. A player may be a key member of the group that frequently stopped Michael Jordan one day and then become a teammate the next. John Salley experienced this change in his game from playing against Jordan and the Chicago Bulls to playing with them.

For eleven seasons, Salley was a dependable big man in the NBA, playing for the Detroit Pistons, Miami Heat, and Los Angeles Lakers. Even though he defeated Jordan’s Bulls twice in a row to win two consecutive NBA titles with the Pistons, his year in Chicago was equally noteworthy.

Teamed up with the Bulls
During the Bulls’ successful 1995–1996 campaign, Salley rejoined the Pistons and got back in touch with James Edwards and Dennis Rodman. In his 11 minutes of playing time, he averaged 2.1 points and 2.9 rebounds as a reserve big man. It was opportune for Salley to arrive in Chicago, as he was able to see the Bulls’ incredible ascent to an NBA championship in six years and a record-breaking 72 wins.

He said the environment around the team was exciting and that it was an honor to play with two of the best players in NBA history, Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.

“It was like being with The Beatles, Elvis Presley, and Michael Jackson all at the same time,” Salley recalled.

Bulls had all the tools they needed.

Salley went on to say that the Bulls had cutting-edge facilities. Although achieving greatness required skill and collaboration, having first-rate facilities helped them in their pursuit of yet another championship. The Bulls had access to everything they needed, including weight and training facilities, to maintain their best physical shape.

“The first of its sort was the Berto Center. Inside was an Olympic-style weight room and a track. There was a pool there,” Salley remarked.

“There were three massage therapy rooms there. Simply sign your name at the top; technically, you had to sign it because Michael and Scottie’s names were written there in ink,” Salley chuckled.
