Ipswich Town: George Burley shares insights on Kieran McKenna and the Blues

Ipswich Town legend George Burley believes the Blues will secure their Premier League spot this season, expressing admiration for their impressive performances.

Ipswich Town icon George Burley shared with BBC Radio Suffolk’s Brenner Woolley that he never felt worried about the team’s early winless streak this season. Following Ipswich’s impressive 2-1 win over Spurs, Burley voiced confidence in the squad’s performance.

“I’ve been at every game, and honestly, the performances have been excellent,” Burley said. “People often say ‘we have to win,’ but the focus should be on strong performances, which ultimately lead to wins.”

Reflecting on their recent draw with Leicester, Burley described it as “disgraceful” due to missed VAR calls and the team’s clear dominance. “It was bad luck and poor decisions. The team is improving each week under Kieran McKenna’s guidance, and I’m confident we’ll stay in the Premier League this season, which is our priority, and continue building for the future.”

When asked about the impact of the team’s first season win, Burley was enthusiastic. “It’s fantastic. That deserved win at Tottenham will boost their confidence immensely. Now, the narrative changes—they’ll be seen as competitors who belong in the Premier League.”

Burley praised Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna, who became the first since Burley himself to lead Ipswich to a Premier League victory. “He’s fantastic. You can see his close connection with the players, and that’s crucial. He’s continually working with them to improve their game, and you can tell how much they enjoy it.”

Burley added, “Watching Ipswich under McKenna is a joy. The style of football, the attacking play, and the development of young players are thrilling to watch. McKenna’s impact on them is evident, and that bond and team spirit go a long way in driving success.”
