With a 2-0 victory over Plymouth, Ipswich returned to second place in the Sky Bet Championship.
In the sixty-third minute, home defender Brendan Galloway diverted Conor Chaplin’s shot into goal, setting up Kieffer Moore to secure Town’s victory.
Goalie Vaclav Hladky of Ipswich made an early stop by Argyle’s top scorer, Morgan Whittaker.
Darko Gyabi, on loan from Leeds, received the ball palmed by the keeper, but his hard low shot from the edge of the box went just wide of the upright.
Conor Hazard of Argyle made a save on target man Moore’s header in the 14th minute as Ipswich counterattacked.
Hladky performed admirably to block Adam Randell’s inswinging corner as the home team attempted to put more pressure on their daring guests.
Omari Hutchinson saw a goal-bound shot blocked after being teed up by impressive midfielder Jeremy Sarmiento.
Whittaker’s 25-yard attempt was blocked in the 35th minute, but it dropped to Ryan Hardie, a striker, on the edge of the box, and his rising drive went just over.
And not long after, Luke Woolfenden, an Ipswich defender, produced an incredible save off the line to block Mickel Miller’s volley.
Ipswich was pressing as the half came to a close, and a diving header from a defender was required to clear Leif Davis’s right-wing corner at the near post.
Second Half struggle
Early in the second half, Whittaker saw Hladky off his line and attempted an outrageous chip from forty yards, but the ball sailed just over.
In the 55th minute, Moore headed towards goal from Davis’s far-post cross from the left, but Hazard again denied him.
Hutchinson sent a curling shot just wide of the far upright after 56 minutes with Hazard beaten and then forced a superb diving save from the keeper on the hour.
Moore assisted Chaplin’s header over the crossbar as the ball looped up to him.
Three minutes later, Chaplin had a great stroke of luck when his 18-yard attempt ricocheted off Galloway, completely wrong-footing Hazard and sending the ball whirling into the opposite corner of the goal.
In the 74th minute, Davis put over another cross from the right, giving Ipswich a two goal lead. Chaplin received a header from Cameron Burgess, and Moore completed with a half-volley at the far post.
With a runaway drive from outside the box in the 78th minute that beat Hladky but smacked across the goal and off the foot of a post, Miller came the closest for Plymouth.
