Inter Milan and France star considers early retirement after EURO 2024 disappointment

Inter Milan defender Benjamin Pavard may end his international career with France following a disappointing EURO 2024 campaign.

At 28, the former Stuttgart and Bayern Munich player is still relatively young. However, he no longer enjoys his status in the French national team.

Pavard was a key figure in Didier Deschamps’ squad during the triumphant 2018 World Cup and played an important role in the Qatar 2022 World Cup. However, he did not make a single appearance in EURO 2024. Deschamps preferred Jules Kounde at right-back, with Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba in central defense.

According to L’Equipe via FcInter1908, Pavard is now contemplating international retirement. He will take a few weeks to reflect on the matter while on holiday before joining Inter’s pre-season camp.

Additionally, Pavard is losing his closest friends in the national team, like Hugo Lloris and Olivier Giroud, which could be another reason to consider ending his international career. Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann and Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman might also be contemplating a similar decision.

Benjamin Pavard could end his time with the French national team after representing the senior squad 54 times and scoring five goals, including his famous strike against Argentina in the Round of 16 of the 2018 World Cup.

Pavard joined Inter Milan last summer and quickly became a key player in Simone Inzaghi’s three-man defense. He won the Serie A title and the Italian Super Cup in his first season in Italy. His contract with Inter is valid until June 2028.
