Mike Hall and Cade Stover, a former Ohio State football player, competed to be the second Ohio State player selected in the 2024 Draft. I always assumed it would be Hall, and I was right, but there was still uncertainty. In the end, Stover persisted through the fourth round.
For him, that proved to be the finest thing in the end. After being selected by the Houston Texans, Stover is back with C.J. Stroud, his previous quarterback. Stroud is excited because he will now toss footballs to Stover during his professional career.
Stover demonstrated why he is an excellent receiving weapon. Houston is aware that he’s not a particularly good blocker. The Texans will not put him in any pass protection scenarios that he is unable to handle since they are aware of this. He probably won’t be running to the side on run plays.
This is a great place for Stover to visit. Because of what Stroud has already accomplished, he gets to play for a young squad. Despite playing in the very competitive AFC South, they are hoping to repeat as postseason winners like they were the previous year.
Stover is a useful tool in the red zone. Stroud is aware of his good catch-radius, so all he needs to do is toss it up there, and Stover will go retrieve it. In those circumstances, as well as third- and fourth-and-short circumstances, Stover will perform admirably.
Other than a decline in his blocking, Stover should have no trouble breaking into the squad. That’s what prevents him from reaching his full potential as a top tight end. One issue he had with the Ohio State football team was that he was unable to keep guys on the edge of their seats.
