The former head of recruitment at Easter Road acknowledges that errors have been made recently.
Former Hibernian (Hibs) head of recruitment, Ian Gordon, has acknowledged that the club had to revise its transfer strategy after past missteps. Under the leadership of new sporting director Malky Mackay, Hibs has shifted towards a focus on Scottish and British players, moving away from their previous approach of rapidly acquiring young, international talent. Gordon explained that the club initially went “too international, too young, too quickly” and that the strategy now involves building a core team around experienced domestic players.
Gordon emphasized that during his tenure, decisions were made collectively, with recruitment being driven by the manager’s preferences. He defended the club’s overall efforts, citing £7 million in player sales over the past three years despite a high turnover of both players and managers.
Financial challenges remain, with Hibs recently recording a £3.8 million loss. Despite this, Gordon assured that his family is committed to supporting the club financially until it achieves the necessary footballing success. The partnership with Bill Foley’s Black Knights group, which invested £6 million into the club, remains intact despite Foley’s public criticisms regarding the team’s management. Gordon believes the relationship is strong and will prove beneficial in the coming years.
