Hutchinson: First Premier League Goal Was a Long Time Coming

Ipswich Town’s Omari Hutchinson shared how he had been putting in the effort during training to make his first Premier League goal memorable, while captain Sam Morsy admitted they always believed it was on its way.

Sky Sports selected Omari Hutchinson and Sam Morsy for post-match interviews following Ipswich Town’s thrilling 1-1 draw at Portman Road. The result once again proved that Town can hold their own against the Premier League’s top-spending teams.

Kieran McKenna’s side faced an early setback against his former club, now led by new head coach Ruben Amorim, as Marcus Rashford netted from an Amad Diallo cross within 80 seconds. However, Ipswich responded strongly and deservedly equalized before halftime, thanks to a spectacular strike from Hutchinson on the edge of the area, deflecting off Noussair Mazraoui.

The goal marked a milestone for Hutchinson, an England U21 international, as his first in the Premier League following his £20 million summer move from Chelsea. Captain Sam Morsy believed Ipswich could have claimed all three points if not for stellar saves from Cameroon goalkeeper André Onana.

Reflecting on the game, Hutchinson credited going behind early for spurring the team into action. “If we go a goal behind, I think we play even better,” he said. “We get an extra boost and extra confidence when we’re 1-0 down. We just have to stay resilient, as Skip [Morsy] said, and aim for positive outcomes.”

When asked about his goal, Hutchinson said, “I’ve been working on it in training,” prompting Morsy to interject, “We’ve been waiting for that one!” Hutchinson added, “I just want to help the team with goals, assists, and performances. Today was just unlucky.” Morsy backed his teammate, saying, “He’s got that quality. He’s scored plenty in training, and we’ve been waiting for that first one. He’ll score many more this season and make a big impact.”

On striker Liam Delap, who posed a constant threat and came close to scoring twice, Morsy remarked, “He’s an old-fashioned battering ram with real quality and power. He’s having a great season. The keeper made some fantastic saves today, so we weren’t too hard on him.”

With no midweek fixture, Ipswich will prepare for their next challenge—a trip to face seventh-placed Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Nuno Espírito Santo’s side will be looking to bounce back after consecutive defeats to Newcastle United and Arsenal.
