How I Almost Brought Andy Robertson to Everton and Manchester United Before Liverpool Snapped Him Up

David Moyes recently shared how he almost secured the signing of Andy Robertson during his time as Sunderland’s manager, only for the deal to fall through, leading Robertson to eventually join Liverpool in 2017. Known for his previous managerial stints at Everton, Manchester United, and Sunderland, Moyes reflected on his brief yet tumultuous season with the Black Cats, which culminated in their relegation. Despite a challenging year, he had identified Robertson as a promising talent. Moyes had even met with Robertson’s agents, aiming to bring him from Hull City to Sunderland, but with both clubs struggling near the bottom of the league, the negotiations ultimately stalled. This missed opportunity paved the way for Robertson’s move to Liverpool, where he quickly became an integral part of the team.

Reflecting on Robertson’s rise, Moyes recalled how the young left-back initially moved from Queen’s Park in Scotland to Hull City before Liverpool recognized his potential. Moyes shared these memories on ‘The Overlap’ podcast, lamenting the missed chance to sign the future star. Robertson himself expressed awe at joining Liverpool, describing it as “surreal” and a “dream come true.” Since then, he has evolved into one of the finest defenders in European football, helping Liverpool secure major trophies, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup. However, recent rumors hint that Robertson may face challenges under Liverpool’s new manager, Arne Slot, after being sidelined following an injury that kept him out of preseason. Slot acknowledged that Robertson’s absence was due to the missed preseason, explaining that he has to catch up tactically and physically.

Despite this, Moyes praised Slot’s performance so far in leading Liverpool after Jurgen Klopp’s departure. Speaking on the ‘Football Daily’ podcast, Moyes drew parallels between Slot’s situation and that of following iconic managers like Sir Alex Ferguson, emphasizing how difficult it can be to take over from a long-standing and highly successful figure. He commended Slot’s resilience, particularly after Liverpool’s comeback victory over an impressive Brighton team, noting how Slot’s leadership has helped maintain the squad’s performance despite the challenges of stepping into Klopp’s shoes.
