Guess One: Fully selected Barnsley’s Top Six Goalscorers of All Time

It’s been some time since they’ve played Premier League. You have to go all the way back to the 1997/98 season for their last taste of top-tier football.

Despite their long absence from the top tier, they’ve had several attackers who’ve done their best to help Barnsley return to the promised land.

We’ve looked back through the list of Barnsley attackers and found Barnsley’s top six all-time top goalscorers.

6. Darren Barnard – 33 goals

26 years ago today at Oakwell:

The ball sits up just right for Darren Barnard, and his left peg’s in no mood for faffing about…

Starting the list is Darren Barnard, who played for Barnsley between 1997 and 2002. Despite being a wide man, the German-born player makes the list of Barnsley all-time scorers.

After spells with Chelsea and Bristol City, Barnard joined Barnsley as they prepared for life in the Premier League. He couldn’t help keep Barnsley in the Premier League.

He played 186 games for Barnsley, scoring 33 goals. Barnard had a goal every 439 minutes for the Tykes.

He stayed with the club until the start of the 2002/03 season, joining Grimsby Town. Bernard retired from football in 2010 to take over as manager of Camberley Town, where he had played for three years.

5. Mike Sheron – 36 goals

Mike Sheron joined Barnsley with a wealth of experience playing for Man City, Norwich City, Stoke City, and QPR before joining the Tykes.

Sheron joined in 1999 and went on to play 165 games, scoring 36 goals. The striker had 0.22 goals per match and a goal every 300 minutes for Barnsley.

After leaving Barnsley, Sherron joined Blackpool before moving on to Macclesfield Town and Shrewsbury Town.

Since retiring in 2005, Sherron has worked as a coach for numerous teams including Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers, and Rotherham United.

4. Devante Cole – 43 goals

The first player to still be actively playing, Devante Cole, only left Barnsley in the summer of 2024. Son of legendary Man United striker Andy Cole, he joined Barnsley in 2021 from Motherwell.

In 152 games, Cole scored 43 goals – which is a goal every 241 minutes for the Tykes.

Despite struggling in the Championship, scoring just one goal in 24 games, he found his scoring boots in League One. Cole scored 15 goals in the 2022/23 campaign and 18 goals in the 2023/24 season.

After failing to help Barnsley get promoted, he was released at the end of the 2023/24 season. He went on to join West Brom in the Championship as he looked to continue his impressive scoring return.

3. Sam Winnall – 48 goals

Sam Winnall joined from Scunthorpe United after impressing for the Irons. He played 115 games, scoring 48 goals – a return of a goal every 115 minutes, the best of any player on this list.

Winnall joined Barnsley in 2014 and was with the club as they won promotion to the Championship in the 2015/16 season.

His time at Barnsley ended sourly as he joined local rivals Sheffield Wednesday in January 2017. After three years with the Owls, he joined Oxford United and after a short spell with Burton Albion, he retired at the end of the 2022/23 season.

2. Cauley Woodrow – 53 goals

The first of two players with 50+ goals for Barnsley, Cauley Woodrow initially joined on loan before making the move permanent in 2019.

In 157 games, Woodrow scored 53 goals for the Tykes before departing in 2022. He had a goal every 236 minutes for the club and had a record of 0.34 goals per match.

He left Barnsley for Luton Town in 2022, helping the side win promotion to the Premier League. Woodrow is still with the team after their relegation from the Premier League in the 2023/24 season.

1.Bruce Dyer – 62 goals

Top of the list of Barnsley’s all-time goalscorers is Bruce Dyer, who played for the Tykes between 1998 and 2003.

Dyer joined Barnsley after their relegation from the Premier League back to the First Division. In his first season with the club, he scored eight goals in 30 games.

He played 195 times for Barnsley, scoring 62 goals. He had a goal every 228 minutes per game for the Tykes.

Dyer played for several more years before retiring in 2008 while playing for York City.
