Former Sheffield Wednesday manager Steve Bruce has been linked with a potential surprise return to the Championship this coming season. Bruce’s departure from the Owls in 2019, after a very brief stint at Hillsborough, left many fans in South Yorkshire displeased despite the decent compensation Wednesday received when he joined Newcastle United.
The former Manchester United defender spent just over two years at St. James’ Park before leaving early in the 2021 season. His tenure at West Bromwich Albion was even shorter, ending in 2022 after the team collected just eight points. West Brom then replaced him with current manager Carlos Corberan.
Since then, Bruce has been out of work, but journalist Alan Nixon reports that he is among the names being considered by Burnley as they search for Vincent Kompany’s successor. Although Bruce is not high on the list, Burnley is reportedly keen to bring in a big name following Kompany’s move to Bayern Munich, with other candidates like Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Thierry Henry also being discussed.
Burnley is not the only club in the Championship seeking a new manager; Sunderland is still looking for a permanent boss after parting ways with Michael Beale in December. Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday has secured their managerial future, with Danny Röhl signing a new long-term deal, quelling any speculation of an exit for the club’s current head coach.
