Former Raptors Show Toronto Was Onto Something With Smothering Defense vs Embiid

OG Anunoby and Precious Achiuwa exhibited formidable defense against Joel Embiid in the recent playoff victory for the New York Knicks, leaving Toronto Raptors coach Nick Nurse with a sense of déjà vu.

Throughout the first three games against the Philadelphia 76ers, Anunoby primarily defended on the perimeter, handling assignments such as Tyrese Maxey, along with occasional matchups against Kelly Oubre and Kyle Lowry. However, in Game 4, the Knicks altered their approach, shifting the former Raptors forward up the defensive hierarchy to guard Embiid during crucial moments. This tactical maneuver mirrored Nurse’s strategies from previous encounters. In the past season, Anunoby successfully contained the 7-foot superstar, limiting Embiid to a 4-for-12 shooting record with two turnovers in their matchups, according to NBA Stats.

The defensive plan proved effective once again in the recent game. Anunoby logged 22.9 partial possessions over 4:50 minutes against Embiid, restricting the former MVP to a mere five points on 1-for-16 shooting. Notably, Anunoby blocked two of Embiid’s shot attempts in the opening quarter and continued to stifle him in the fourth quarter with relentless defense. Yet, Anunoby was not solely responsible for the containment.

Precious Achiuwa also played a significant role in limiting Embiid’s impact, holding him to just two points in 7.8 partial defensive possessions spanning 1:32 minutes. Achiuwa’s defensive prowess was evident when he swatted away Embiid’s late shot clock three-point attempt, sending the ball into the crowd.

The Knicks’ defensive strategy, featuring versatile wings like Anunoby and Achiuwa, has proven successful, allowing them to dominate the 76ers in key moments. Employing Anunoby and Achiuwa as their frontcourt in crucial junctures, the Knicks effectively outrebounded and outworked their opponents, showcasing the effectiveness of their defensive approach.

Interestingly, Nurse had previously utilized similar tactics against Embiid during the 2022 playoffs. Now, facing his former players executing his past strategies against him, Nurse finds himself on the receiving end of his own playbook.
