Former Leeds United, West Brom and Watford man takes coaching post with Birmingham City

Paul Robinson, a former defender for Leeds United, has rejoined Birmingham City in a coaching capacity.

After six years as a player at St. Andrew’s, the 45-year-old hung up his boots to begin his coaching career with the team. Gary Rowett, the former manager of the Blues, has now returned to his position as Birmingham’s temporary manager.

In order to fill Tony Mowbray’s medical leave until the beginning of the 2024–2025 preseason, Rowett has been brought in to fill the interim position. Having previously led the Blues from 2014 to 2016, he is back.

After Rowett brought the former defender to The Den, Robinson and the coach were reunited at Millwall. Robinson had played for Rowett at Birmingham.

During his playing career, Robinson was a tough-tackling defender who played for Watford, West Bromwich Albion, and Bolton Wanderers. He made over 500 games overall until moving to Yorkshire in 2012.

During Neil Warnock’s tenure, he made ten appearances for Leeds after joining on loan from Bolton. He did not finish the 2011–12 season at Elland Road; instead, he returned to Bolton when Warnock said it was improbable he would sign a long-term contract.

Birmingham confirmed his return with the following statement: “Birmingham City can confirm two additions to Gary Rowett’s staff.” Dave Carolan and Paul Robinson will be the interim managers for the final eight games of the 2023–24 Sky Bet Championship season.

“While Robinson played for the Club for the last six years of a 736-game professional career that began with his home team Watford and included stops at West Bromwich Albion, Bolton Wanderers, and Leeds United, both helped Rowett at Millwall and had previously worked at Blues.”

“After retiring in 2018, the former Club Captain took on a series of responsibilities overseeing the under-23s and under-18s for two seasons before being named the Den’s First Team Coach.

“Carolan has worked in the sports science department for Ipswich Town, Norwich City, Colchester United, and the Blues. Later, he took on performance-based roles at Derby County, Stoke City, and the Lions. Carolan has over 25 years of experience in the elite game.” He has supported Rowett in each of his last three roles. Greetings from Robbo and Dave again!
