The Green Bay Packers have undergone substantial transformations in recent seasons, with much of the spotlight focused on player transitions on the field. The high-profile shift from Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love at quarterback remains a topic of ongoing discussion. Additionally, the departure of Aaron Jones and the acquisitions of Josh Jacobs and Marshawn Lloyd have captured attention. However, notable changes have also taken place within Matt LaFleur’s coaching staff, particularly in recent months.
Following the Packers’ elimination from the NFL Playoffs by the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round, LaFleur took decisive action by parting ways with defensive coordinator Joe Barry. In Barry’s stead, LaFleur enlisted Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley as the new defensive coordinator. This decision triggered a cascade of changes, including the departure of several position coaches, reassignments, and promotions within the coaching staff.
Former Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry quickly found a new role as the linebackers coach for the Miami Dolphins after his dismissal. Prior to his tenure with the Packers, Barry served as the linebackers coach for the Los Angeles Rams. Jerry Montgomery, the Packers’ longtime defensive line coach, also moved on following Barry’s exit, now assuming the same role with the New England Patriots.
Even before the recent offseason, the Packers’ defensive coaching staff had experienced considerable turnover. Another significant departure was that of Aubrey Pleasant, who, after being passed over for the defensive coordinator position, transitioned to the role of assistant head coach/defense for the Atlanta Falcons. Pleasant, who previously served as an offensive consultant for LaFleur, was recently promoted to assistant head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, marking a significant milestone in his coaching career.
Pleasant’s coaching journey includes stints with multiple NFL teams, including the Cleveland Browns, Washington Commanders, Rams, and Lions. His prior association with the Rams overlapped with LaFleur and Barry’s tenure, during which he served as the cornerbacks coach.
