Former Miami Dolphins linebacker Mike Kolen, who played a significant role in the team’s legendary undefeated season in 1972, passed away at the age of 76, as confirmed by Auburn University and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.
Kolen, a standout at Auburn University, joined the Dolphins in 1970 and quickly became a key player, starting every game at right linebacker during his rookie season. He played a pivotal role in Miami’s historic run, which included a perfect 14-0 regular season and a victory in Super Bowl VII over the Washington Redskins.
Despite being drafted in the 12th round, Kolen’s impact on the field was undeniable, earning him recognition as a key member of the renowned “No Name Defense” that anchored the Dolphins’ championship teams.
Throughout his NFL career, Kolen played in 84 regular-season games and 11 playoff contests, leaving a lasting legacy both on and off the field.
He was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1985 and honored with the Mike Kolen Award, presented annually to Auburn’s leading tackler.
Additionally, Kolen was the inaugural recipient of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes College Athlete of the Year Award in 1970, reflecting his dedication to his faith and his contributions to the community.
