Five Nottingham Forest players under scrutiny as Nuno tackles crucial transfer choices

Latest Nottingham Forest update as the Reds’ manager aims to reduce squad size during the summer transfer window.

Nottingham Forest have made it a priority to trim their squad this summer, reflecting head coach Nuno Espirito Santo’s preference for working with a smaller team.

The Reds set the tone early by releasing six players at the end of their contracts and sending five loanees back to their parent clubs. Wayne Hennessey, Felipe, Cheikhou Kouyate, Loic Mbe Soh, Scott McKenna, and Harry Arter officially left at the end of June, along with loan players Gonzalo Montiel, Divock Origi, Nuno Tavares, Gio Reyna, and Rodrigo Ribeiro.

Additionally, Odysseas Vlachodimos, Brandon Aguilera, Orel Mangala, and Moussa Niakhate have departed on permanent transfers. Jonathan Panzo and summer signing Marko Stamenic were loaned out earlier in the summer.

However, there is still work to be done. Here’s a look at the players with uncertain futures at the City Ground.

Joe Worrall: After the Reds’ opening friendly with Chesterfield, Nuno mentioned that decisions would be made about players returning from loan spells. Worrall, who spent the second half of last term on loan at Besiktas, is expected to move on this summer, with Sheffield United expressing interest.

Matt Turner: The arrival of Brazilian Carlos Miguel has pushed the American further down the pecking order, now finding himself as the third-choice goalkeeper. Turner, who moved to the City Ground for more game time, may now be considering a move, with interest reportedly coming from the MLS.

Josh Bowler: The winger’s lack of celebration when he scored against Chesterfield and Nuno’s omission of Bowler in his list of winger options suggest he might be heading elsewhere. Bowler, who has had several loan spells since signing for the Reds in 2022, would likely benefit from a permanent move.

Emmanuel Dennis: There are questions about whether Dennis should be part of Nuno’s plans. Despite showing effort during pre-season, his performance remains inconsistent. Dennis, who was on loan at Basaksehir and then Watford last term, may also be among those considered for departure.

Hwang Ui-jo: The forward seems likely to leave without making a first-team appearance for Forest. Signed two years ago, Hwang has had multiple loan spells. A permanent transfer would be ideal for both the player and the club.
