Graeme Murty, the coach of Sunderland, has outlined his plans for the upcoming season after successfully leading the under-21s team to the final of Premier League 2. Murty confirmed that he would continue his work with the under-21s next season, even though he spent some time with the first-team squad during the 2023/24 season. In 2022, Murty was appointed as the head of the professional development phase, a role in which he has thrived, notably guiding the under-21s to the Premier League 2 final, where they were defeated 3-1 by Tottenham. Reflecting on his role after the match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Murty expressed his commitment to the under-21s, stating, “I’m going to be doing my job, so until I’m told otherwise I’m looking after these guys.” He praised the group for their talent, hard work, and honesty, highlighting the constructive and honest relationship he and his staff have built with the players. Murty emphasized his satisfaction and enjoyment working with the team, noting their collective accountability and development throughout the year.
Before joining Sunderland, Murty had a stint as the caretaker manager of Rangers’ first team, eventually being appointed until the end of the 2017/18 season. When asked about a potential return to first-team management, the former Reading defender shared that it was not his current focus. He expressed his enjoyment in working with the first team when called upon but reiterated his passion for developing the under-21s. Murty stressed the importance of ensuring the continued development of his players, recognizing the challenges ahead in maintaining and improving the progress made this season. He pointed out the necessity of reflecting on the entire developmental program, not just the games, to provide the players with the experiences they need to grow. For now, Murty is focused solely on the development of his under-21s squad, aiming to make the next season even more successful than the last.
