Daniel Jones, the former quarterback for the New York Giants, is currently part of the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad. However, his stay with the Vikings may be short-lived, as many within the NFL predict that Jones will soon pursue a new opportunity. After parting ways with the Giants on November 22, Jones found himself in Minnesota, but NFL analyst Matt Holder believes he could be headed for another team after the season ends. Holder isn’t alone in this prediction, with several experts speculating that Jones’ next move could be to a team in need of a solid backup quarterback.
One team that has been frequently mentioned as a potential landing spot for Jones is the Miami Dolphins. In a December 2 feature for Bleacher Report, Holder notes that the Dolphins are looking for a reliable backup for starter Tua Tagovailoa. While Tagovailoa has shown strong command of the offense under head coach Mike McDaniel, his injury history raises questions about the depth at quarterback. Holder believes Jones could thrive in Miami, working behind the scenes to develop under McDaniel’s guidance. Additionally, if called into action, Jones would have the opportunity to play with top-tier players like Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and De’Von Achane, making it a win-win situation for everyone involved.
This idea of Jones joining the Dolphins isn’t new. Prior to his time with the Vikings, there was already speculation about Jones potentially serving as a backup to Tagovailoa. In a November 27 article for PhinPhanatic, writer Brian Miller suggested that while Jones may not have turned Miami into a Super Bowl contender, he would have provided more experience than current backup quarterback Skylar Thompson. Miller argued that bringing in Jones wouldn’t have been a financial burden and could have been a beneficial move for the team. He questioned how much worse Jones could be than Thompson, highlighting that a change of scenery might have helped Jones’ career.
However, not everyone is convinced that Jones would be the right fit in Miami. Alain Poupart of Sports Illustrated expressed skepticism in a November 24 article, questioning whether Jones would perform any better than Thompson if called upon. Poupart acknowledged that while adding Jones might be an interesting move, he didn’t believe it would significantly improve the Dolphins’ backup quarterback situation. Ultimately, the debate continues as to whether Jones’ future lies with Miami or another team, but many believe he will be seeking a fresh start in the near future.
