Frank Lampard, the former player for England, Derby County, Chelsea, and Everton, has been associated with numerous managerial positions. Recently, he disclosed that he has declined several managerial offers but emphasized his eagerness to return to full-time management. Lampard, who previously managed Chelsea and Everton, was rumored to be a contender for the Sunderland head coach position following Tony Mowbray’s dismissal last season. Despite bookmakers frequently listing him as a candidate to replace Michael Beale at Sunderland, Lampard has chosen to wait for the right opportunity. Reflecting on this, he explained that while some opportunities did not feel right, he now feels ready to resume his career. He stated, “I’m certainly ready to work. I love doing what I do, so we will see.”
The 45-year-old, who also managed Derby County, expressed that he enjoyed his break from football, acknowledging that the intense nature of football management often overshadows personal life. During his hiatus, he valued the time spent with his young family. Although he served as Chelsea’s caretaker manager in 2023, Lampard has since been linked to various roles, including managerial positions at Canada, Rangers, Burnley, and Birmingham City. Lampard shared on air that while he appreciates the importance of working, the year off allowed him to focus on his family life, which includes his four children, two of whom are very young. He mentioned that this time away has also provided him the opportunity to reflect, watch games, and continue his professional development.
Lampard reiterated his readiness to take on a new challenge, emphasizing his extensive experience with difficult roles. He highlighted his tenure at Derby, where he managed to reach a play-off final despite financial constraints, his time at Chelsea under a transfer ban, and his stint at Everton amidst various issues. Lampard now seeks the right job with appropriate support and realistic expectations. He believes his past experiences have prepared him well for future challenges and is confident in identifying the right opportunities.
Currently, Sunderland is considering candidates like Pascal Jansen and Liam Rosenior for their next permanent head coach, following Mike Dodds’ interim period at the end of the 2023-24 season. Queens Park Rangers’ Martí Cifuentes has also emerged as a potential candidate. Sunderland concluded the last season with a disappointing 16th place in the Championship, prompting owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus to address supporters’ concerns in a recent statement.
