The manager of the City is looking forward to discussions with the club’s leadership this summer regarding issues he found concerning, such as inadequate communication regarding finances and challenges in the transfer market.
Enzo Maresca’s recent discussions with Leicester City’s top management don’t signify a struggle for more control over internal affairs, the manager clarified. Shortly after City clinched the Championship title, Maresca expressed his desire for sit-down talks with the club’s decision-makers, highlighting aspects he found unsatisfactory.
His concerns revolved around the failure to secure Stefano Sensi from Inter Milan in January, reflecting on its implications for City’s transfer strategies, and the lack of transparent communication regarding the club’s financial matters, potentially resulting in penalties upon their Premier League return.
While Maresca’s public call for discussions might have seemed like a power play, given his position after leading City to the top flight as champions, he downplayed any intentions of seeking greater authority over the club’s operations.
“No, no, I’m not asking for more control,” Maresca emphasized. “Absolutely not. I’m asking just to be able to do my job that I’m being paid for. No more than that. It’s not even a problem. It’s just things that happen that I didn’t like during the season.”
Maresca intends to engage in these talks with the club’s hierarchy and commence planning for the upcoming season in a few weeks’ time, following a well-deserved holiday with his family.
While there’s speculation about potential structural changes, Maresca’s friend, journalist Guillem Balague, hinted that the manager might explore other options if adjustments weren’t made. However, recent reports from Spain suggest that Sevilla, initially interested in Maresca, may redirect their focus due to City’s promotion to the Premier League, which has reportedly doubled Maresca’s release clause to €10m (£8.6m).
