Global music icon Ed Sheeran has apologized to Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim for interrupting his post-match interview on Sky Sports following Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town.
After the match, Ruben Amorim was being interviewed on Sky Sports when Ed Sheeran unexpectedly interrupted the pitchside segment to chat with Jamie Redknapp on air. The moment was awkward and uncomfortable, with Sky Sports coming under fire for allowing it to unfold. This isn’t the first time the network has been criticized, given their track record of hiring controversial figures for post-match duties.
The matchday coverage has noticeably declined, and many Manchester United fans, in particular, find the commentary, especially from Gary Neville, increasingly irritating.
Following the incident, Sheeran faced backlash on social media and quickly took to Instagram to apologize to Amorim. He explained that he hadn’t realized the interview was in progress and was just stopping by to say hello to Jamie. Sheeran admitted feeling embarrassed but emphasized it was a great game and congratulated those involved.
Sheeran, a fan of Ipswich Town, recently became a minority stakeholder and the club’s shirt sponsor. However, his uninvited interruption during the interview left many feeling it was a disrespectful overstep, especially given Amorim’s effort to participate in the post-match discussion.
