The announcement follows Port Adelaide’s convincing victory over Richmond, in which Aliir contributed to keeping Tom Lynch and Noah Balta quiet with their combined total of only two goals.
After making his league debut for Sydney in 2016, Aliir went on to become one of the league’s most well-known intercepters when he moved to Port Adelaide in 2021 and had an All-Australian season.
He is now 29 years old and has been the Power’s starting down back for more than three years. Since then, the team has added Brandon Zerk-Thatcher and Esava Ratugolea to provide him with important defensive support.
“I’m excited to sign on with Port Adelaide for another two years,” Aliir said.
“I feel like I’ve played some of my best football at this club and there’s nowhere else I’d rather be. The culture we have built here is something special and I’m excited to see where this group can go.
“I’m also loving working with a new-look backline and I’m feel refreshed and energised for the year ahead.”
This Saturday night, when Port Adelaide plays Melbourne at home, fans will joyfully commemorate Aliir. The Power supporters have many happy memories of Aliir, notably the goal he scored to win an SCG thriller against Sydney the previous season.
Jason Cripps, the list manager, expressed his joy at getting Aliir’s signature.
“Over the last three seasons, Aliir has proven to be an important asset to our defensive unit and our club as a whole,” he said.
“He has speed, strength and is excellent at reading the play. Not only is he a great player, he’s someone a lot of our younger players look up to. He adds so much to the playing group, both as a footballer and as a person.”
This Saturday at the Adelaide Oval, Port Adelaide will want to go 3-0 against a diminished Melbourne defense.
