Dodgers’ Dave Roberts Reveals Concerning Update on Walker Buehler’s Injury

The Los Angeles Dodgers have started the 2024 MLB season strong, but star pitcher Walker Buehler has struggled with his comeback from injury. In June, Buehler experienced a slump, and manager Dave Roberts later disclosed that Buehler had hip discomfort. Roberts suggested that the extra strength Buehler gained from his previous injury rehab might be impacting his pitching mechanics. Roberts is working on a plan for Buehler after placing him on the injured list following their series against the Colorado Rockies.

“We haven’t completely figured it out,” Roberts said. “With Walker, it’s about understanding who he is as a pitcher right now, considering his body is heavier and stronger post-surgery. We need to understand how his body movements relate to his pitch mechanics and delivery.” The plan for Buehler’s recovery is still under development, with options ranging from off-site to internal treatments.

Buehler, who spent over a year recovering from Tommy John surgery due to a 2022 elbow injury, returned in 2024 but hasn’t matched his previous performance. In eight games, the 29-year-old has a 1-4 record with 31 strikeouts, a 5.84 ERA, and a 1.51 WHIP. His last start saw him give up seven runs and seven hits against the Rockies on June 18th, although the Dodgers won 11-9.

Reflecting on his rough start, Buehler admitted, “We’ve thought about taking a break, maybe a month or a week off, to reset. It sucks to feel invaluable or like you’re hampering your team.” He acknowledged his physical progress but was disappointed with his performance: “Physically, I’m ahead of where I thought I’d be, but performance-wise, I feel terrible. It’s put-up or shut-up time for me, mentally, and my recent starts haven’t been good enough.”

Dave Roberts is determined to devise a plan that will help Buehler recover and regain his form as the Dodgers aim to maintain their strong season.
