Center Luke Kornet from the Boston Celtics introduced the “Kornet Contest” to overshadow the Phoenix Suns in a prime-time matchup.
Boston Celtics center Luke Kornet couldn’t hide his delight after a successful Saturday night clash against the Phoenix Suns, where the Celtics triumphed 117-107.
During a post-game interview with NBC Sports Boston’s Abby Chin, the 7-foot-1 Kornet found himself at the center of a playful interruption.
Guard Derrick White stepped in to showcase his rendition of the “Kornet Contest,” a signature move involving a vertical jump from any spot on the court to disrupt the shooter’s view. In response to White’s demonstration, Kornet quipped, “The eclipse was built for the Sun,” adding a touch of humor to the moment.
Beyond the lighthearted banter, the 28-year-old Kornet played a pivotal role in securing Boston’s 49th win. Filling in for the sidelined Kristaps Porzingis, Kornet contributed significantly with 14 points, six rebounds, and a block in 20 minutes of play. Notably, he showcased his dunking prowess with a career-high five dunks, exploiting Phoenix’s defensive vulnerabilities against lob threats.
Reflecting on his performance, Kornet acknowledged the teamwork that led to his success: “Guys just found me. [The Suns] were kind of playing up, so just trying to get behind the defense. Had some great passes from guys.”
Despite an outstanding 45-point, 10-rebound performance from Suns star Kevin Durant, the Celtics managed to avoid a three-game losing streak, a feat they hadn’t experienced all season. The dynamic duo of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown combined for 56 points, making crucial plays in the closing moments.
Tatum, in particular, delivered 13 of his 29 points in a tightly contested fourth quarter. With this victory, the Celtics now boast a 49-14 overall record, holding an eight-game lead in the Eastern Conference.
The Celtics’ road trip continues, with a matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday, followed by a journey to face the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City.
